A memorial and celebration of life will be held for Joe Romine on Saturday, April 21 at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Brighton. Joe passed from this world shortly before midnight on December 31, 2011. He was 78 years old.
Born January 21, 1933 Joseph Chapman Romine, known as Joe to countless friends, Dad to his children, Poppy to his grand children, and Uncle Joe to many nieces, nephews and friends; was known for his sense of humor, his charm, his compassion, his strength and determination. He was a loyal and faithful husband and loved his children unconditionally. He was a master storyteller, a talented harmonica player, a brilliant chess player, mathematician and Christian man. He was pretty decent golfer and loved a friendly game of Euchre and was always up for a good poker game. Joe was involved with numerous organizations that enriched the lives of others including Meals-on-Wheels and various youth programs in Clare County.
He was a past-Master of the Brighton Masonic Lodge and life-time member of the Brighton and Pinckney Masonic lodges. He loved to fish, hike and was an avid deer “watcher” choosing to leave the hunting to others. He was a leader in the Sea Scouts, a branch of the Boy Scouts of America focusing on nautical achievements. Over the years he raised thousands of dollars for the Michigan Special Olympics and was a frequent volunteer at events cheering the athletes to victory. Joe was involved in his church in Clare and had served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Unadilla, where he and Georgia were married.
Joe graduated from Denby High School in Detroit, attended Michigan State College (now MSU), Wayne State and Eastern Michigan University. He was a land surveyor and spent the majority of his career with Munzel Engineering in Brighton, later employed by Progressive Engineering, also of Brighton. He was passionate and patriotic about his country and served in the Army during the Korean War.
Joe was the son of the late Joseph Chapman and Marjorie Elizabeth (Eppinger) Romine. Brother of Jim (Ruth) Romine of Brighton and the late Gladys Togel and Betty Gordon. Joe was born in Detroit, marrying and raising his family in Brighton. He and Georgia retired to Farwell, Michigan in 1998.
Joe is survived by his wife of 51 years, Georgia Lorraine (Paxton) his seven children and 8 grandchildren: Steve (Linda) Romine of Vacaville, Ca and their son Victor. Linda Romine and her children Matthew and Angela (Brian) of Algonac, MI Tracy Zeiter and her children Carson, Orion and Rhiannon of Brighton, MI; Francine (Phil) MacBride and their children Connor and Brayden of Ann Arbor, MI. Marcy (John) Raftery of Cairo, Egypt. Jeanie (Roy) of Brighton and Amy Romine of Ypsilanti. Joe also is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
