Melvin Smith, 25, and his father Melvin Smith, 45, were both arrested July 26 at a home on Knollwood Road in Hayes Township.
The younger Smith was called a “fugitive absconder.” And when Clare County Sheriff Department Deputies attempted to access the home where he was reportedly hiding, they were denied access. Meanwhile the younger Smith made an attempt to elude capture by fleeing out the back door of the home. He was apprehended there on multiple warrants while his father Melvin Smith attempted to stop Deputies from making the arrest. The older Smith was also arrested at the scene.

Both men were arraigned in 80th District Court July 29 by Magistrate Karen Willing.

Smith (the father) was arraigned on Resisting/Obstructing Police and harboring Fugitives/Felons. His bond was set at $250,000 cash/surety.

Smith (the son) was arraigned for Resisting/Obstructing Police, Absconding/Forfeiting Bond, Domestic Violence and Malicious Destruction of Property under $200. His bond was set at $1,550,000 cash surety.

Clare County Prosecutor Michelle Ambrozaitis said the unusually high bond was set for the younger Smith because, “We received a tip that he was planning to leave the State. He absconded while out on bond on two pending felony matters, and while out on bond, he committed two additional crimes. He has been back and forth between here and Florida with his family while trying to evade arrest. We no longer have faith that he will appear for any scheduled hearings on his court cases.”
A 22-year-old man, also of Harrison was arrested at the residence for an outstanding warrant. He has posted bond and has not yet been named pending an arraignment.

The Smith men, both father and son, remain lodged at the Clare County Jail.
