The season on the whole has been a resounding success for the Farwell girls basketball team. Friday night’s road game at Houghton Lake was another story however, as the Lady Eagles came up short, 43-22.

“Tough game for us, we started out a little slow,” head coach Gordie Risbridger said.

The Lady Bobcats got off to an early 4-0 lead, with Farwell pulling ahead 8-6 until a quick H-L run made it 10-8 after one quarter. The Eagles struggled mightily on offense in the second quarter, unable to find the bottom of the net, resulting in a 20-8 hole at the break.

“This was not out of the norm as we have been down to start quarters, the problem was that we couldn’t make our shots,” Risbridger said. “We scored no points in the second [quarter], we had a number of opportunities but we just couldn’t knock down shots. This prohibited us from getting good pressure on the other team in the full court. Houghton Lake was able to get run outs and we did a poor job of getting back on loose balls.”

Farwell did dip into the Bobcat lead slightly in the third quarter, pulling with 26-16 entering the fourth quarter, but H-L sealed the win as the Eagles tried to foul to get back in the game.

“We came out in the second half and played well defensively in the third quarter,” Risbridger said. “In the last quarter, we made no shots from the field and were only able to get points by going to the free throw line.”

The Eagles were led by Jenna Odykirk with eight points and eight rebounds, Hunter Sponseller had four points, six rebounds and four steals, Grace Saupe had four points and 11 rebounds, Rio Risbridger had three points and eight steals, Harley Crawford had two points and three rebounds and Aliyeh Wyatt had one point and three boards.

Farwell (6-2 overall, 3-2 JPC) hosted Roscommon on Wednesday, hosts Clare tonight (Friday) and heads to Merrill on Tuesday.
