“We didn’t shoot the ball well in the first quarter, but we were getting good looks,” head coach Kevin Richards said. “Our defense and hustle plays really carried us through that point.”

Clare led just 7-6 after the first quarter but thanks to its shooters heating up, managed to pull ahead 25-7 by the half.

The Pioneers tacked onto their lead with a 19-10 third quarter edge and finished off with a 7-6 fourth quarter.

“We started hitting those shots in the second quarter and that carried into the second half,” Richards said. “We played very unselfish basketball and did a great job with our ball movement. When we play like that, we’re going to be a tough team to beat because so many people contribute. Houghton Lake is very athletic and is a tough team so this was a great team win for us.”

Natalee Kunse hit three treys in the game and finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, four assist and four steals, Lainey Veenkant had 10 points, four rebounds and two assists, Ellie Johnson chipped in with nine points, four rebounds and two steals, Brooklyn Tocco added seven points and two rebounds and Peyton Hubel had five points, five assists, four steals and two rebounds.

Clare (2-0 overall, 1-0 JPC) hosts Meridian tonight (Friday) and heads for Harrison next Friday.
