The Clare softball team didn’t have much of a problem with visiting Houghton Lake Tuesday night. The Lady Pioneers won both sides of the Jack Pine Conference doubleheader handily, claiming a 15-0 win in game one and a 12-2 victory in the nightcap.

“We just did what we were supposed to do,” head coach Jeff Albert said. “We were able to string hits together and score runs. Everyone down the line had quality at bats and when we got on base we were aggressive.”
Abby Mellish was the winner in game one. She helped her own cause at the plate with a pair of singles and Amber Hochstetler and Ashlyn Miller combined to drive in five RBI.

Game two saw Savannah Robinson get the win.

The offense was led by Robinson, who helped her own cause with three singles and courtesy runner Taylor Dole came in to score all three times. Monica McPhall had two singles and Jalyn Burhans had an RBI double.

The Pioneers also played a JPC twinbill at Meridian on Friday. The games were originally scheduled for Thursday, but were pushed back a day due to weather. Clare lost both sides, 1-0 and 13-3 against the ranked Lady Mustangs.

Mellish lost game one, while Robinson and Hochstetler had two hits apiece on offense.

Game two had Monica McPhall lead the offense with two singles and two RBI.

“We played really well, especially in game one,” Albert said. “Meridian is a tough team but a 1-0 game is about as close as you can get, but they just came out ahead.”

Clare hosted Beaverton on Thursday, hosts Ogemaw Heights on Monday and hosts Farwell on Tuesday.
