Police say an autopsy has verified that there was no foul play in the death of Michael Joseph Smay, 48, of Lake.

Smay’s body and his bicycle were found by his sister in a ditch alongside US-10 between Partridge and Garfield Avenue late Tuesday afternoon. Clare County Sheriff’s Department Detective Mike Coon said, “He hadn’t been seen since Saturday, when he left on the bike. He may have been returning to his home on Kay Lynn Drive from a trip to a nearby store. He was reported missing Sunday.” He was lying in tall grass approximately three-quarters of a mile from his home, Coon said.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday in Grand Rapids. “The cause of death is believed to be natural causes [complicated by] medical issues,” Coon said. “Some autopsy results are still pending. We don’t have the toxicology results yet.”
