Garfield Township filed an updated 5-year recreational plan with the Natural Resources Trust Fund which paves the way to file grant requests to build a Trailhead staging area around the restored Lake Station depot, for visitors along the Pere Marquette State Trail between Clare and Reed City.
Led by resident Jeanie Stewart, the Parks Committee has finalized a grant for the Township Board to hold a public hearing and review for adoption on March 23. Plans are to improve all the township parks but a Trailhead would provide shade areas, benches, picnic tables and toilets. A loading ramp and parking area will be for snowmobilers.
Riders of the state trail continue their journey in Clare on the 30-mile bike trail that ends in Midland. The Parks Committee also is working toward qualifying the historic coal tower as a National Register of Historic Site. Built in 1930, it is one of the state’s last remaining relics of railroad history.
