One week after hearing two magic words “Play Ball”, little league sluggers in Clare and Harrison were hard at work sending baseballs and softballs sailing into the heavens – little league season was officially underway. In Farwell and Clare sunny weather greeted bundled up fans who braved brisk winds and chilly temperatures.

In Harrison the season was also underway, however, the traditional parade and opening ceremony, was delayed for one week to May 5, due to the Seventh Annual Freedom Run/Walk in honor and memory of 2007 Harrison High School Graduate Spc. Robert Friese who gave the ultimate sacrifice during Operation New Dawn Iraq on April 29, 2011.

After weeks of cold, damp and even snowy weather Mother Nature finally delivered a home run providing plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the 70’s.

Bright and early Saturday morning players and coaches marched from Larson Elementary in the annual Harrison Little League parade led by the American Legion Post #404 Honor Guard to the Harrison City Park ball diamonds for ceremonies. Once at the field players gathered in the infield for the raising of the American flag prior to opening ceremonies. During the event speeches and donation presentations from American Legion #404 to the Harrison little league program were presented.

For the first time this season the concession stand actually had demand for cold beverages versus hot drinks and fans were actually seen in summer attire. Old fashion summer like weather had finally arrived for the 2018 baseball season.

Thanks to many fine coaches, volunteers, fans, supporting businesses and community groups the Harrison Little League is going stronger than ever. In the weeks ahead get out to the old ballpark and watch some great kids in action. Buy a hot dog at the concession stand and support today’s youth in America’s favorite pastime.
