Louisa Jean “Jeannie” Gisvold, age 74, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Friday, January 3, at her home. She was born the daughter of Theodore and Lydia “Louisa” (Rogers) Bowler on Oct, 1, 1939 in Clare. Jeannie had moved to Mt. Pleasant 10 years ago from Burke, Virginia and had lived in Clare throughout her youth. She had been a Professor of French at Northern Virginia Community College for 37 years and while teaching there had attended the American University at night to earn her Juris Doctorate. She practiced law in Virginia specializing in Child Advocacy and worked as Juvenile Court Referee and Magistrate for the Isabella County Trial Court for the last 10 years. Education was very important to her and while pursuing her education, she attended and received degrees from universities in the U.S., Canada and France. She was a member of both the Michigan and the Virginia Bar Associations, the N.E.A., and the St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Clare.
Jeannie is survived by her children, Kristin (Cory) Smith of Capon Bridge, W. Va., Eric Gisvold of Capon Bridge , W.Va., and Dana Gisvold of Hedgesville, W. Va., her brother, Theodore «Joe» Bowler of Moorpark, Ca., and her grandchildren, Connor Smith and Dalton Shirley.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 11:00 AM from the St. Cecilia Church in Clare with Fr. Prentice Tipton officiating. Burial will be in the St. Cecilia Cemetery in Clare. Friends may meet with her family on Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM at the Clare Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home where a scripture service will be held at 8:30 PM.
