The City of Mt. Pleasant welcomed its Central Michigan University students home for the 2014-2015 academic year. The return of the students community referral to as “Welcome Back Weekend” took place this past Thursday through Sunday.
The Department of Public Safety, in partnership with CMU, carried out a number of preventive steps to ensure a safe environment for all who live in and visit our community during Welcome Weekend.
CMU and the City sent out a notice of laws and ordinances as well as key resources to all students who are registered at the university. Staff from the City along with those from CMU walked around our student resident section educating and enlisting their help. They also participated with CMU in providing an educational program for all incoming freshmen and transfer students.
With all of these proactive measures, the department of Public Safety was still very busy this past Welcome Weekend and responded to and generated a number of complaints.
The weekend started with quiet crowds, but escalated to large gatherings in the student resident section. Officers were busy dealing with large crowds and controlling them. Most gatherings were cooperative while others were argumentative at times causing concern for officers. Some unruly party goers climbed light poles, threw beer cans, bottles, and rocks at police. A few fires were started, but were contained quickly.
