Bertha I. Davis, age 93, died on July 20, 2014 at her home in Farwell, MI. She was born to a farm family, the 5th of 7 children, in rural Slater, Missouri on November 3, 1920 to Arthur B. Kitchen and Violet (Witt) Kitchen. A good student, she graduated from high school and went on to Business College.
She enlisted in the Army in March of 1943 with the promise of using her business college skills. She was immediately sent to Mississippi to drive trucks. While there she met her future husband, Stanley, on a double date when he ignored his date and concentrated on her. Small wonder! She had been chosen as an Official Army pin-up girl, posing in very modest shorts with a tennis racket, which she always said was funny since she knew nothing about tennis. She wrote to Stanley the whole time he was overseas. She married him after he returned on the troop ship from China, when as she said, he was skinny and weak.
Bertha and Stanley were married on January 2nd, 1946. They bought a small farm near Sears, Michigan where they lived while Stanley worked on construction jobs in Southern Michigan. She was a farm wife and did everything from fixing her son’s BB gun (which shot her in the palm, causing a sting and forever ending the repair service) to milking 20 cows and selling eggs. She kept a big garden and had the basement shelves full of home canning. The family never went hungry. Missouri farm girl training paid off.
In the early 1960’s they had a house built and moved to the Farwell, Michigan area where Stanley established an excavating business. Bertha was the book-keeper and parts “runner” which almost ended one day when “muffler bearings” were put on her list. After getting laughed at in the auto parts store she told the boys, “No more jokes.”
She was very active in the Farwell United Methodist Church as she had been at the Evart Methodist Church while living on the farm. She taught Sunday school for decades and was active in all the different groups in the church. Her special joy was the yearly Methodist Church Bazaar for which she made literally thousands of items. Her fingers were never idle. She was a long term member and supporter of the church and cherished her church “family”. She will be deeply missed.
Her husband Stanley died on June 2nd, 2002. They had been married 56 years. Also preceding her in death were three brothers and one sister. Surviving her are one brother and one sister; also surviving are two sons Terry A. (Cheyleen) Davis and Kris L. (Kristy) Davis, two grand-daughters, Sara Davis of Washington and Jessica Felix of New Hampshire and two great-grandchildren Lila and Landon Felix also of New Hampshire.
Funeral Services will be at the Campbell Stocking Farwell funeral home on Friday, July 25th, 2014 at 10:00AM. Pastor Connie Bongard will officiate.
