Grover “Dude” Junior Updyke 93 of rural Harrison passed away peacefully on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Woodland Hospice and Morey Bereavement Center, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Grover was born the son of Grover Updyke Jr. and Bina Jacobs on December 16, 1923 in Temple, Michigan. Mr. Updyke honorably served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. On December 6, 1946 in Harrison, Grover was united in marriage to Ms. Donna Joy Dexter. After sixty one years of marriage, Mrs. Updyke preceded Grover in death on December 14, 2007.
Dude had been a life resident of Clare County. He retired from Dow Chemical Company of Midland, Michigan after thirty years of dedicated service. Mr. Updyke was a life member of the Lake George Boosters Club, Lake George, Michigan, long-time member of the American Legion Post 404, Harrison and V.F.W. Post 3039 Sparta-Esterline of Farwell. Grover enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards with family and friends, vegetable gardening, canning and baking his famous pies.
Surviving Mr. Updyke are his two daughters: JoAnn Heintz of Harrison and Mickey Anderson and husband Gary of Montrose, Michigan, three sons: Don Blackledge and wife Joyce of Clare, Michigan, Duane Updyke and wife Elaine of Harrison and Mike Updyke and wife Marilyn of Farwell, Michigan, one daughter in law, Diane Updyke of Sunfield, Michigan, eighteen grandchildren, thirty four great-grandchildren, eighteen great-great grandchildren, plus a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Updyke also was preceded in death by his parents, two sons: Gary Updyke and Eugene Blackledge, one son in law, Don Heintz, one sister, Jenny Updyke Bringold and Three brothers: Glen Updyke, George Updyke and Art Updyke.
Celebration of Life services honoring Grover will be held Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. from Stocking Funeral Home, Harrison with Reverend Samuel J. Chizmar officiating. Family and friends are encouraged to gather on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service to share memories and pay tribute to Grover.
Inurnment for Mr. Updyke was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Harrison.
