Larry Eastley

Larry Eastley, age 92, of Roscommon, passed away on May 28, 2019, in Grayling, Michigan.

He was born in Laurium, Michigan on September 5, 1926.

He graduated from High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Larry served in the Philippines in World War II and was honorably discharged in August 1946.

He attended Northern Michigan University, majoring in Sociology with a minor in History, Economics and Guidance Counseling.

Upon graduation in 1950, he worked as a social worker for 2 years at the State Dept. of Social Services.

In September 1952, he started teaching at Roscommon High School. The first year he taught a joint 6th and 7th grade.

The following year, he taught World History, Government and Driver Education. Larry initiated the Counseling Program in 1954.

While in Roscommon, Larry was very active in the community, serving as Treasurer and then President of the Teachers Club – when he had then going into Michigan Education Association Members.

Larry was a Gerrish Township Trustee and a member of the Rotary Club. He also served as the Grand Knight of the Roscommon Grayling Knights of Columbus.

Larry earned his master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1952 and his Education Specialized Degree in Counseling graduating from Central Michigan University in 1962.

In June 1962, he started teaching at Central Michigan University full time until September 1964 yet continued to teach part-time at Central until September 1986. Larry retired in 1981 from Central Michigan University as Counselor and Guidance Director.

While in Clare, Larry was very community oriented. He was a two-time president of the Clare Kiwanis Club and on the Clare City Commission. He served as Clare City Mayor in the mid 1980’s.

He also served on many boards and commissions and worked in the Chamber of Commerce.

He was active in the VFW and marched in community parades and was a member of Veteran Funerals for over 20 years.

He owned and operated Clare Realty until 1993. In August 1993, Larry and his wife Clare retired to Roscommon, Clare’s hometown where they were married in November 1953 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Clare passed away in 2003 after a long illness.

Larry will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his brother Bruce (Tasha) Eastley of Sacramento, California; brother-in-law Jim Fisher of Roscommon; sister-in-law Charlotte Fisher of Temperence, Michigan; sister-in-law Nancy Fisher of Dexter, Michigan; best friend and caregiver, Jean Carlson of Roscommon, Michigan; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Clare.

Family and friends will gather on Saturday, June 1, 2019 for a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM with an hour of visitation prior to the Mass at St. Michael Catholic Church, 104 North 6th Street, Roscommon, Michigan 48653.
Larry will be laid to rest at Pioneer Cemetery in South Branch Township, Michigan.
