Mona E. “Monie” Wood

Mona E.  “Monie” Wood, age 89, of Clare, passed away on Sunday, June 30, at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland. 

She was born the second daughter of five girls to Burley and Flossie (Burton) Shaver on January 4, 1930, in Clare.  

She married Lavern Wood on June 7, 1952, and he preceded her in death on June 20, 1999.  Monie was a lifelong resident of the Clare area and was an active member of the Our Lady of Hope (St. Cecilia) Church in Clare where she was a member of the Ladies Guild.  

She was an amazing seamstress who could sew just about anything.  
She had sewn many wedding gowns as well as becoming an accomplished upholsterer. Monie was an avid reader and particularly fond of Danielle Steel novels.

Though small in stature, Monie was big on personality, “when Monie was in a room, you knew it, as laughter was sure to follow.”

Monie is survived by her children, Michael (Susan) Wood of Macon, Ga., Thomas (Michele) Wood of Lakeland, Tn., and Mary Wood of Clare, her grandchildren, Evan, Cameron, Alexandra, Caroline, Connor, and Ashley, and her sisters, Janet (Phil) Goudie and Gayle (Ed) Gillis-White.  She was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter, Darlene, and sisters, Virginia and Donna.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 6, at 11:00 AM at the Our Lady of Hope – St. Cecilia site, Clare, with Rev. Peter Nwokoye officiating.  
Burial will be in the St. Cecilia Cemetery in Clare.  Friends may meet with her family at the Clare Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home on Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM, a scripture vigil service will be held at 8:30 PM.  

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
