Oren R. Hartnell

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOren Robert “Sonny”  Hartnell – age 74  of Lake, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Woodland Hospice in Mt. Pleasant. A service is planned for Oren on Saturday, April 19, at 11 AM, at the Campbell Stocking Family Funeral Home in Farwell. Friends may visit on Friday, April 18, from 4 to 8 PM, and on Saturday from 10 AM until the time of service. Burial will be in Gilmore Township Cemetery. Elder Dean Beavers will officiate.

Oren was born on June 17, 1939, the son of Jesse J. and Leah A. (Schaar) Hartnell in Flint Michigan. He was a 1957 graduate of Farwell High School. He achieved his Associates Degree from Ferris State College in Automotive Service and a Masters Degree + 30 from Central Michigan University. As a professor of Auto Technology, he taught at Mid-Michigan Community College for 23 years.  He was a member of Farwell Community of Christ Church. Oren was a man of many trades which included printing at the Sentinel Newspaper and other various newspapers; farming, and furnace repair. He enjoyed boating, water skiing, camping, garage sales, hunting, and flea markets. He was fondly named Sonny and Uncle Sonny to his many family members.

He leaves to cherish many wonderful memories, his wife of 53 years, Janet, two daughters; Loretta Hartnell and husband Scott Borow of Rochester, Pamela Hartnell of Clare, three grandchildren; Matthew and Sarah Leiterman and Uriah Lange and wife Jessica, four great-grandchildren; Ezekiel, Owen, Ashton Oren, and Willow, and  one brother Theo Hartnell and wife Patty of Farwell. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Milburn “Bud” Hiles and Ted Hiles.

    It saddens me to hear of the loss of Oren. I enjoyed him as a teacher and as a friend. He will be sadly missed.
