Orville Martin Wiggins- age 87 passed away on May 2, 2014 at Bella Woods AFC in Dewitt. Orville was born on July 15, 1926 in Farwell, the son of Edmond and Velma (Ockert) Wiggins. Orville married Joyce Schaar in July 1949. After serving our country with the United States Army, he made his living as a land surveyor for the State of Michigan Dept. of Transportation.
His career as a surveyor perfectly placed him in the woods and outdoors where he most loved to be. Orville was not a “city slicker” by any shape or form. He was happiest and most comfortable in the outdoors. He was the epitome of an honest hardworking man, and his family members or anyone who knew him benefited from his knowledge about wildlife, especially birds, and the land. He was a member of Lake Eagle, the Farwell VFW Post and of the American Legion Post #558. He farmed his beloved land and raised beef cattle, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time in the U.P. Orville could be seen regularly at the area stockyards.
He leaves to cherish so many wonderful memories and a legacy of love for the land, his son Larry Wiggins of East Lansing, two daughters; Kathleen Johnson of Lansing, and Cheryl Wiggins of Gladwin, five granddaughters; Micha Rawlings, Tara Farhat, Tonya “Tonto” Couts, Jessica Gonzales, Jenna Johnson, four great-grandchildren, and his dog and best buddy Black Jack.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lylia Butterfield, wife Joyce and an infant son Orville. A service is planned for Friday, May 9, at 2Pm at the Campbell-Stocking Family Funeral Home in Farwell. Orville will be laid to rest in Gilmore Twp. Cemetery. Pastor Kevin Smith of the Gilmore Church of Christ will officiate. Friends may visit on Thursday, May 8, from 4-8PM and again on Friday from 12:00PM until the time of service.
