Philip B. Bitterman

9-13-13 OBIT Phil B BittermanPhilip B. Bitterman, age 84, passed away Monday, September 9, 2013 at Woodlands Hospice surrounded by his family and friends. Philip has gone to join his beloved wife Lillian in their heavenly home with the Lord.

He was born June 22, 1929 in Lansing to Francis & Philip Bitterman, and was raised in Lansing and Chesaning, where, on August 12, 1950, he married the love of his life, Lillian Gengler who passed away in 2007.

He served his country honorably as a member of the United States Army.

Phil owned Modern Furniture and Floor Covering in Chesaning for a number of years. After retiring, he and Lillian moved to Eight Point Lake full time, where he then took on the job as Administrator of Farwell Area Schools.

He was a wonderful father and grandfather, loved to play cards, was  a long standing member of several euchre leagues and will be remembered for his sense of humor, stubbornness, and willingness to lend a hand to anyone. He loved hunting and fishing, snowmobiling, travel,  his cottage at Eight Point Lake and spending time with family and friends.

Philip is survived by his six children, Luann and William Hedrich of Chesaning,  Cindy and Thomas Hedrich of Oakley, Mary Kay and Mack Shannon of Rodney, Michael and Donna Kay Bitterman of Indiana, Patrick Bitterman and Kimberly Manor of Lake,  and Mark Bitterman of Lake.

Philip had 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

He has three brothers in law, Wilfred Gengler, Ray (Diane) Gengler, James (Ann) Gengler and one sister in law, Isabelle Birchmeier.  Philip is also survived by a very special friend, Minnie Herrera.

Philip was predeceased by his parents and his sister Adelaide Warden.

Funeral liturgy will take place on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 10:00 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Chesaning, MI. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

Philip was an avid supporter of Big “R” and Smokin’ Joe’s Hospice Benefit supporting Mid Michigan Hospice. The family asks in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Big “R” and Smokin’ Joe’s Hospice Benefit, 10813 N. Shore Drive, Lake, MI  48632
