Velmer Glen Stevens, age 90, of Clare, passed away on Thursday, January 24, at McLaren Central Michigan Hospital in Mt. Pleasant. He was born the son of Kamiel and Gladys (Hillard) Stevens on March 14, 1922 near Stanton, Michigan. He married Vivian Valentine on May 31, 1946 and she preceded him in death on Dec. 13, 2001.
Velmer served with the US Army as a Medic during WWII, and had been a Truck Driver for Fisher Sand and Gravel. He loved to hunt and fish, was a bit of a Jokester, and a tease. He was a great story teller, often sharing stories of his wartime experiences.
Survivors include his children, David Stevens (Judy Ellis) of Clare, and Judy (James) Babcock of Coleman, his sisters, June Pelton and Nancy Stevens-Raymond both of Clare, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and friends. he was preceded in death by his wife, a son, Leo, two infant daughters, Trudy and Shirley Ann, his brother Frances, and sisters, Madeline Reger, Delphina Clark and Barbara Hewitt.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 28, at 1:00 PM from the Clare Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral home with burial following in the Cherry Grove Cemetery.
Friends met with the family on Sunday at the funeral home from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Coleman Veteran’s Memorial.
