The funeral service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Harrison, MI on Sunday, June 9th at 3 PM followed by a lite lunch. Reverend Ron Cook of the First Congregational Church of Harrison, MI will be officiating. Visitation will be held at Stephenson Wyman Funeral Home in Clare, MI on June 7th (Friday), from 6 PM to 8 PM, and June 8th (Saturday) from 2 PM to 5 PM and 7 PM to 9 PM. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Clare Chapel of Stephenson Wyman Funeral Home.
Walter was born at home on August 27th, 1937. He graduated from Clare High School and took additional business courses at Central Michigan University
Walter was married to Carolyn (Carter) on December 13, 1960; they were married 52 years.
Walter was Owner/CEO of Tandem Transport Corp., a for-hire motor carrier (trucking company). He never retired and celebrated 42 years of service with Tandem this past March. Walter was also a Board Member of Harrison Lumber Company for many years including his service as President since 2008.
Walter was a member of the Michigan Trucking Association and the American Trucking Association working diligently to promote the interests of the trucking industry. He served as an officer of MTA from 1988 to 1993 and held the office of President in 1991 and Chairman in 1992 and 1993. He also served as State Vice President to the ATA from 1996 to 2008. He also served as a member of the Highway Police Committee and Regulatory Committee.
Walter was a dedicated Christian and member of the First Congregational Church of Harrison, MI where he also served as a Trustee.
For leisure, Walter enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and assisting his wife Carolyn with her business of breeding and racing horses. This led him to be a member of American Quarter Horse Association and the Great Lakes Quarter Horse Association.
Walter is survived by his wife Carolyn, two children, Maria (Jeff) Gross and David Bay, and grandchildren, Jackson Gross, Jordan Gross, and Jeffrey J. Gross and other family and friends.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Helen Bay.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the First Congregational Church of Harrison, MI or to Carolyn Bay to be used at Mid Michigan Community College (family to direct this funding).
