The Clare varsity baseball team hosted its own tournament on Saturday, coming in second place. The Pioneers opened the day with an 11-0 win over Freeland behind a win by Charlie Bugbee.
Bugbee, Logan Emery, Gabe Denton, Matt Magnus and Erik Hasenfratz all had two hits. In the championship game Clare fell to Shepherd, 7-3 with Chris Dysinger taking the loss. Denton, Hasenfrantz and Camden Dice had one hit apiece.
On Thursday, April 24 Clare hosted Meridian in both team’s Jack Pine Conference opener, winning game one 7-3 but losing game two 11-2. “Good split with Meridian, they have a really solid baseball team,” Clare head coach Skeet Colosky said. Colton Punches got the win in game one, giving up one earned run on seven hits while striking out six and walking five.
Denton and Emory had a hit and an RBI apiece, Dysinger, Punches, Magnus and Bugbee all head one hit. Charlie Bugbee suffered the loss in game two. Bugbee did get two hits at the plate however, as did Denton and Jordan Gross. Denton and Gross both had one RBI apiece.
Clare (7-3 overall, 1-1 JPC) played at Beaverton on Thursday and plays at Houghton Lake on Tuesday.
