Relay teams score high for Clare at state meet

There was a heavy dose of Clare County at the track state finals on Saturday. Clare, Farwell and Harrison competed in the division three meet at Jenison, while Coleman made the trip to the division four meet at Hudsonville-Baldwin Middle school.

The Clare boys had Brenden Sersaw take 21st in the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.72 and Alec Hoffman was 18th in the pole vault with 11-09.

The Pioneers also had three relay teams at the finals, with the 4×200 team coming in fourth with a time of 1:31.06 on runs by Sersaw, Colt Smedley, Aidan Boyd and Jake Hawley. The 4×100 team of Sersaw, Smedley, Nick Roe and Hawley placed sixth in a time of 44.32 and the 4×400 squad of Sersaw, Hawley, Smedley and Ben Wood was sixth by clocking a 3:30.62.

The Lady Pioneers had Lainey Veenkant come in fifth in the 3200 in a time of 11:06.82, Kayden Barber and Regan Weeks placed 15th and 25th in the 100 meter hurdles, timing out at 16.85 and 25.30. Lexi LaPoe was 14th in the 300 hurdles, crossing the line in a time of 49.44. Grace Ann Gomez was eighth in the pole vault at 9-06.

The Pioneer girls also had an 11th place 4×400 relay team of Katherine Haupt, Riley Schroeder, Abby Leigh and LaPoe in a time of 4:11.83, the 4×200 relay squad of Raegan Louch, LaPoe, Holley Gilmore and Schroeder was 13th in a time of 1:50.85 and in 21st was the 4×100 team of Olivia Cook, Kayden Barber, Gilmore and Louch, running a time of 52.82.

Farwell’s Jenna Odykirk wrapped up her storied career by competing in two sprint events. She took third in the 200 at 26.13, fifth in the 100 meter dash at 13.08 Mia Fetzer also competed in the shot put, taking 12th with a toss of 35-03. The lone Farwell boy at the finals was Zach Carpenter, as he placed 14th in the shotput at 45-05.

Harrison had Hugh Brand compete in the discus, as he took 12th place with a throw of 138-08.

Coleman had Jaden Bovee take ninth in the pole vault at 11-06 and Makailyn Monson was seventh in the long jump at 15-08.5.
