Saginaw man charged in Walmart theft

Dennis Paul Pratt, 49, of Saginaw was arrested January 14 and arraigned January 17 for stealing more than two tons of batteries from a fenced in area at Walmart in Mt. Pleasant.
Pratt faces charges of Larceny $1,000 or more but less than $20,000, a felony with a five year maximum penalty and up to a $10,000 fine ; and with Malicious Destruction of a Building – $200 or more but less than $1,000, a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of one year and up to a $2,000 fine.
His bond was set at $100,000 ten percent cash/surety.
According to a press release January 13 from Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski, Sometime between 8 and 9 p.m. on January 10, Pratt was filmed by security cameras breaking into a fenced in area outside the Tire Lube Express at Walmart. He reportedly hooked a chain to the back of his green and silver pickup and the other end to the locked gate and pulled the gate open. He allegedly stole approximately 180 used batteries from the storage area outside the facility. The batteries were valued at $1,600.
The Sheriff released the video from the scene and asked local media to publish a still-shot of the man and help with the search. Tips from seeing the photo led to Pratt being arrested late Tuesday afternoon after driving to a scrap yard in the Ashley-St. Charles area. Mioduszewski said he was amazed that the truck’s suspension held up and reported that the truck ran off the road into the ditch twice during the trip.
The batteries were recovered and returned to Walmart.
