The Clare Lady Pioneers showed no signs of rust after a 15 day layoff between games on Thursday, Jan. 3, topping visiting Roscommon 74-19 in Jack Pine Conference girls basketball.
“We shot two-of-16 from three-point range which is uncharacteristic but still were able to score 74 points,” Clare head coach Matt Rodenbo said. “The team is learning that when you do everything else right that it will cover up an area that you may struggle with on a particular night.”
Clare got off to its usual fast start, leading 25-5 after the first quarter and 49-11 at the half. The third quarter saw the Lady Pioneers outscore the Lady Bucks 21-4, with both teams netting four points in the fourth.
Lindsay Winter led Clare with 17 points, nine rebounds, six steals and six assists, Melissa Benchley had 15 points, Ashley Petree had 14 points and eight rebounds, Courtney English had 10 points, Alex Stark had seven points, three rebounds and three assists and Corrine Wezensky had nine points and eight rebounds.
Clare (6-1 overall, 5-0 JPC) hosted Farwell on Thursday, play at Central Michigan University against Beal City on Saturday and play at Gladwin on Tuesday.
Saturday’s game against Beal City will be played at 8 p.m., following the boys game.
“Playing at CMU is a great opportunity for our team,” Rodenbo said. “This is the second year we have done it against Beal City. They are a quality team that is very well coached. We are looking forward to the challenge.”
