Host Beaverton managed to keep Clare leading scorer Lindsay Winter under 15 points on Friday, Jan. 24 but the Lady Pioneers still rolled over the Lady Beavers, getting a 62-34 Jack Pine Conference win.
“We did not shoot the ball real well but we played good defense and rebounded which led to the win,” Clare head coach Matt Rodenbo said. “Beaverton is well coached and played very hard tonight which gave us some trouble early on in the game.”
Clare led 13-7 after the first eight minutes and led 32-20 at the half. The Pioneers clamped down defensively in the third, holding the Beavers to just four points to lead 47-24 entering the fourth. Clare continued its strong play in the final stanza, outscoring Beaverton 15-10.
Courtney English had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead Clare to the win, Winter had 14 points, nine steals, five rebounds and four assists, Ashley Petree had 13 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists, Liz Fancon and Corrine Wezensky both had nine points, with Wezensky adding 17 rebounds.
“I thought Corrine and Courtney played real well tonight,” Rodenbo said.
Clare (11-1 overall, 9-0 JPC) had its game at Harrison scheduled for Tuesday postponed due to weather. The make up date is set for tomorrow (Saturday). The Lady Pioneers also hosted Meridian on Thursday and play at Sacred Heart on Monday.
