Farwell dropped its regular season finale 54-45 against visiting Jack Pine Conference foe Gladwin on Thursday, Feb. 28, in a game that saw the Eagles lead early on only to see it slip away as the night progressed.
The night started well for Farwell, getting early three-pointers by Jacob Sutton and Will Hallman, with Hallman, Dylan Brown, Walter Mosby, Trent Marhofer and Seth Baginski hitting two-point field-goals to give the Eagles a 16-6 lead after the first quarter.
Marhofer scored five points in the second quarter but the Eagles could only add a shot by Mosby as they scored just seven points in the quarter, though still led 23-18 at the half.
Brown had four points in the third and Curtis Robinson hit a three-pointer to keep Farwell ahead, though just slightly at 32-31 entering the fourth.
Gladwin took a lead early in the final stanza and hit 12-of-16 free-throws to pull away down the stretch. Farwell’s quarter was highlighted by a three-pointer by Sutton and four more points by Marhofer.
The Eagles were led by Marhofer with 13 points and two steals, Brown had eight points, six rebounds and two steals, Sutton had six points, Mosby had six points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists, with Hallman and Robinson both netting five points apiece and Baginski had two points.
“We played well in the first half but our mistakes cost us in the second half,” Farwell head coach Erik Schunk said.
Farwell (4-16 overall, 2-12 JPC) played host Big Rapids (19-1) to open district play on Wednesday. The winner of that game plays the winner of Clare (12-9) and Reed City (11-9) tonight (Friday). The winner of the Big Rapids district plays in the Fremont regional on Monday and Wednesday.
