A Shepherd man died Sunday morning in a two-vehicle crash at the corner of Leaton Road and Broomfield Road in Isabella County’s Chippewa Township.

According to a release from Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski, a 2002 Mercury Villager driven by Mark Anthony Sura, 49, was southbound and Leaton when he ran a stop sign and was hit in the driver’s side door by a westbound 2012 Dodge Ram pickup on Broomfield driven by Robert Ivan Gates, 43 of Mt. Pleasant. The accident happened at 7:50 a.m.

Sura was pronounced dead at the scene, Mioduszewski reported. Gates was taken to McLaren Central Michigan by Mobile Medical Response with non-life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, the release said.

Assisting at the scene were Tribal Police, Michigan State Police, Tribal Fire Department personnel and MMR.

The accident is still under investigation, the Sheriff said.
