“Shop Small, Save Big” a big success

Clare’s Shop Small, Save Big event was a huge success for Clare this year, with receipts for the event totaling more than $71,700.

The campaign, which was organized by American Express in 2010, urges shoppers to support their local businesses throughout the year, and especially during the holiday season.

During the week-long Clare event, shoppers who spent $10 or more at any local chamber business were eligible to win prizes during the week of Thanksgiving by signing the back of their receipt and dropping them into any of the 30 drop boxes around Clare. The drawings were held the week after Thanksgiving.

Clare Chamber Executive Director Damon DuBois said, “Nearly $1,500 worth of prizes were awarded during the BUY LOCAL campaign. The grand prize winner, Pat Vanconant of Macomb won $500 in Clare Cash (the winning receipt was entered at Jay’s Sporting Goods of Clare).

Clare Cash is accepted by over 50 businesses in the Clare area.

The top five winners during the new week-long “Shop Small, Save Big” event Sunday November 18 through Saturday the 24th were Grand Prize winner Pat Vanconant of Macomb; 2nd prize winner Steve Scoville of Farwell; 3rd prize winner Mary Tate of Clare; 4th prize winner Kathy Bertoncin of Rochester Hills; and 5th prize winner Teresa Ranes of Lake.

Nearly $1,500 in gifts were donated by Clare Area Chamber members.

The top five businesses with the most sales receipts for the week-long event were Jay’s Sporting Goods with a total of $10,910.47; Russell Cellular receipts totaling $10,816.74; Clare Family Fitness with a total of $9,908; Cops and Doughnuts who had $8,153.16 in sales; and Pere Market & Antiques II with a total of $5,000.04.

Of the 1,365 sales receipts collected around the City, the five businesses collecting the most receipts were Cops and Doughnuts with 434 entries, Witbeck’s Family Foods with 128 dropped off there, Jay’s Sporting Good with 91 deposited and Russell Cellular with 75 turned in.

DuBois said, “The Clare Area Chamber of Commerce and all its members encourage you to Shop Local, Shop Small all year round and, as our winners found out, for one week when you do Shop Small in Clare, you can win BIG.”
