It took just three sets for the Clare volleyball team to claim a win in its division two district semi-final game Wednesday night. The Lady Pioneers were able to handle Standish-Sterling 25-16, 25-18 and 25-23 at Chippewa Hills, punching their ticket to the district championship game.

“These girls showed up like they had a plan and they were willing to do whatever it took to get the win on the scoreboard,” head coach Shannon Zinser said. “They played as a team like every point mattered and it showed. They have just gotten better and better as the season has progressed.”

Jenna Betts led the team with 11 kills and 16 digs and Bailey Taylor had six kills, 19 digs, two aces and one block. Olivia Cook had five kills, 13 digs, one block and two aces, including an ace for the final point of the night. Abby Mellish added 27 assists and 11 digs.

On Wednesday, Oct. 30 the Pioneers played in a Jack Pine Conference quad at Pinconning, going 2-1 on the night. Clare topped host Pinconning 25-10 and 27-25, edged Harrison 25-10, 17-25 and 25-21 and fell to Gladwin 25-23 and 25-20.

“We started out strong against Gladwin and just didn’t have some things go our way,” Zinser said. “I am proud of them for pushing through all night long. We finished third in the JPC, the highest finish since 2008. There has been so much growth in this program in the past four years and it shows that they have been putting in the work that was needed to grow the program.”

Betts put down 24 kills and added 23 digs, three aces and one block, Taylor had 22 kills, 31 digs and six aces, Cook had 15 kills, 37 digs and two aces and Mellish tallied 63 assists, 21 digs and three aces.

Clare battled Gladwin for the district final on Thursday. The winner advances to regional action next week, hosted by Gaylord in a non-traditional regional. Tuesday’s regional semi-final match takes place in Cadillac with the finals taking place at Gaylord.
