Clare kickers win district opener

Clare varsity soccer head coach was quick to admit that he wasn’t happy with his team’s play in the first half of its division three pre-district game at Oscoda on Tuesday. Hew as also quick to admit that things improved greatly in the second half, allowing the Lady Pioneers to pick up a 4-1 victory.

“We didn’t play very well in the first half,” Bond said. “We were struggling to link together passes and when we got chances to score, we just couldn’t get it done.”
The second half was another story however as the Pioneer got things going to put the Lady Owls away.

“We played much better in the second half and started to do some of the thing we are capable of doing,” Bond said. “We need to be better though if we plan on advancing. Our district is wide open and I think there will be some close games from here on out.”

Gwen Sherwood did a lot of damage with three goals. Kaylee Walls had one goal while Karis Dice and Sherwood had assists. Oscoda got its only goal on a penalty kick.

Clare played Tawas Area in a district semi-final game on Thursday in Gladwin. The finals are also in Gladwin, set for Saturday at 1 p.m. Ogemaw Heights and Gladwin played in the other semi-final.
