Clare’s number 19 – Liz Fancon – boots the ball out of harm’s way.

The Clare varsity girls’ soccer team fell to visiting Big Rapids Crossroads 3-0 Monday night, in Northern Michigan Soccer League play.
The Lady Pioneers were shutout in the contest, despite out-shooting the Cougars 18-3 in the contest.
“That’s incredibly frustrating,” Clare head coach Joe Zavaglia said. “You look at the score and you think Crossroads must have been great, but no not at all. We hit the post, we hit the crossbar it just wasn’t going in.”
Crossroads scored an early goal to take a 1-0 lead, a margin they carried into the second half. Early in the second half, the Pioneers appeared to have booted in a goal that would have tied the game but the officials ruled the Cougar goalkeeper made the save in time.
With the Pioneers thinking they had scored a goal, the Cougars raced down the other end of the field and kicked in their second goal to make it 2-0. Crossroads added its final goal with 13 seconds left in the contest.
“I was proud of the girls,” Zavaglia said of his team’s performance. “The girls are working hard and they’re really getting better. We did everything right but score.”
On Saturday, Clare competed in the Alma tournament, going 1-2 on the day.
The Pioneers opened up with a 1-0 loss to Shrine Catholic Central and followed that with another 1-0 loss to Bullock Creek.
Clare ended its day with a 6-0 win over Carrollton. Scoring in the contest were Caitlin Correll with two goals, Madison Cleary, Tammy Ames, Olivia Cooper and Corinne Wezensky all had one.
“It was a really great weekend,” Zavaglia said. “I was thrilled with the girls. I knew Shrine was amazing and it was exhilarating to win at the end.”
On Friday, May 3 the Pioneers dropped a home contest to Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian in a 1-0 NMSL contest.
Clare played at Cheboygan on Thursday and hosts Gladwin on May 14.
