The cross country state championships were held at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday. As usual, Clare was able to make some noise in the division three race. The Lady Pioneers were able to take eight place out of 27 teams while the boys had a pair of strong runs by their individual qualifiers.

“I was very impressed with how our team performed at the state finals,” girls head coach Kyle McKown said. “They prepared well, believed in themselves, and we had one of our best overall team days of the entire season. Their eighth place finish marks their fourth consecutive top-10 finish, and their sixth top 10 finish in the past nine years.”

The girls had Katherine Haupt lead the way with a 50th place finish in a time of 20:22, Kameron Haag wasn’t far behind as she was 53rd in a time of 20:28, Riley Schroeder was 55th by running a 20:30, Hattie Veenkant clocked a 20:56 to come in 91st, Abby Leigh added a finish of 108th with a time of 21:04, Sofiah Coker ran a 21:28 and was 133rd and Allie Boyd was 231st in a time of 24:34.

“The girls ran hard from start to finish and I was impressed with their fight every step of the way, they definitely made us all proud,” McKown said. “We have been a pack team all season and the gap in time between our first and fifth runner was only 42 seconds at the state finals, which was the smallest gap in time between all of the teams’ in our race at the sate finals. A lot of hard work went into this season. We overcame challenges and finished the season strong. I’m excited to see what this group can continue to accomplish in future seasons.”

The boys had Kaleb Schroeder and William Bell compete as individuals, as they finished 144th and 168th respectively, with times of 18:17 and 18:28.

“Will and Kaleb did what was asked of them all season,” boys head coach Adam Burhans said. “Although their final race was a bit challenging and not how they wanted to end, they both helped inspire a group of underclassmen and junior high boys who will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. They will both be greatly missed from a team that overachieved all year.”
