Clare had an easy time in the first game. It had a battle in the second. Regardless, the Pioneers won both sides of its non-league home doubleheader with Shepherd on Thursday, as it won by scores of 16-1 and 8-7.

Justin Bidwell got the win for the Pioneers in the opener. He pitched four innings and gave up one run on four hits and three strikeouts.

A big seven run fourth inning helped Clare take control of the game, getting key hits by Nice Pace, Tanner Punches, Jeff Allen, David Fremin and Bidwell getting key RBI hits in the frame.

Fremin, Punches and Bidwell finished with multiple hits in the game, with Punches and Fremin getting three hits each. Punches also had four RBI.

In game two, Clare had to rely on a bases loaded walk to Punches to get the walk-off victory. Nick Roe got the win, as he struck out three batters in three innings of work. Chandler Denton started the game, pitching the first four innings and fanning three.

Brennan Farrell and Roe had multiple hits in the win.

Clare hosts a division three district tournament on Saturday. The Pioneers play Harrison in the semi-finals, with Farwell and Beaverton playing in the other semi-final.

“Saturday should be a great day to play some baseball,” head coach Skeet Colosky said. “We always look forward to this time of year. If our kids enjoy the moment they will have a good day.”
