There was no post-holiday hangover for the Clare boys basketball team. The Pioneers, playing a road non-league game at Reed City were able to dominate the Coyotes out of the gates, rolling their way to a 54-36 victory.

“After a two-week break and one week that we couldn’t get into the gym at all we knew it would take some time to get things going again and back in rhythm,” head coach Matt Alexander said. “I was really pleased with our defense. I felt we were very aggressive and had great communication and rotations. When you can keep a team to 21 points through three quarters you are doing something right.”

The Pioneers led just 10-9 after the opening quarter but did get that margin to increase to 23-16 by the half, thanks to five points in the second by Jacob Recker. Hunter Woolston was able to add five points of his own in the third, helping the Pioneers claim a 36-21 lead entering the fourth. Woolston connected on four free throws down the stretch and had 10 total points in the fourth to help secure the win.

“Offensively we struggled at times,” Alexander said. “We just had a hard time getting back into the groove with one another. Some credit has to go to Reed City also. They are a very quick and aggressive team on defense as the game went on we started to get into a rhythm and find some easy scoring opportunities.”

All things considered, Alexander was happy to claim the victory.

“I’m pleased with going on the road out of break and getting a win but also need to prepare for a battle in Meridian (Thursday),” he said. “We will have to play much better basketball to come away with a win against a good Meridian team.”

Woolston finished with 19 points to lead the offense, Todd Lake netted eight points, Lane Ingram and Recker each had seven points, Mason Clark six points and Shane Jenkins chipped in with six points apiece.

Clare (4-1 overall) was at Meridian on Thursday, hosts Harrison on Tuesday and stays at home to play Farwell on Thursday.
