Clare’s Fifth Street was closed Tuesday morning while Great Lakes Central Railroad workers moved a locomotive back onto the tracks near Fifth Street.

The engine had derailed due to ice and snow on the tracks early Monday afternoon just south of the Fifth Street railroad crossing when two wheels came off the track. Tuesday workers first towed the engine forward, then jacked the massive engine up and using steel plates maneuvered the wheels back onto the tracks. It took about an hour, police said. Shortly before noon Tuesday the intersections was cleared for motorists.
