Commemorating Veterans’ Day across the area, the Clare-Farwell American Legion Post 558 is hosting the annual “Wreaths of Remembrance” on November 9 as a part of the Veterans’ Day weekend events.
Ceremonies to remember those who sacrificed their lives in service to America are scheduled at the Gilmore Township Cemetery at 10 a.m., the Surrey Township Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., at the Veterans’ Memorial in Lake George at 22:30 a.m. and at the Cherry Grove/St. Cecilia Cemeteries at 1 p.m. today.
Five wreaths will be placed at each ceremony: one each for Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy.
A luncheon will be provided at Post 558 at approximately 1:30 following the Cherry Grove Ceremony with a special Chili Cook-off hosted by the SAL. There will be a $50 first prize for the best chili.
Clare area veterans of active and reserve service and their guests are invited to attend the Clare High School Veterans’ Day Program at Clare High School Monday, November 11.
The program, with the central theme of saying “thank you” to our veterans, begins at 9:30 a.m. in the high school gym. The U.S. Army Recruiting Station of Mt. Pleasant and the Central Michigan University ROTC Unit will provide the color guard.
Just before the program begins the Clare Veterans of Foreign War post will replace the flag in front of the high school.
Speakers will be State Representative Joel Johnson, Iraq Veteran Greg Kolhoff and Clare County Veterans’ Affairs Director Renee Haley.
The Clare High School Band will perform several selections and former and current student vocalists will perform. Several inspiring videos will also be shown and Sound Productions will provide the video and audio support.
“We will also be dedicating a Veterans Bench in the courtyard near the plaque memorializing CHS graduates who died in Vietnam,” High School Principal Lee Turner said.
A luncheon for attending veterans, their guest and the CHS faculty will follow the program in the high school library.
Veterans wishing to attend are asked to contact the Clare High School office at 989-386-7789 to give their names, branches of service, number of guest and whether they plan to attend the luncheon.
In Farwell Veterans’ Day Ceremonies will be held at the Village Park at 11 a.m. on November 11.
In Harrison there will be a memorial service in front of the Clare County Courthouse on November 11 at 11 a.m.
Immediately following the service, the public is invited to a luncheon at the Harrison Veterans’ of Foreign War Post 1075, across from the Dairy Queen.
At 2 p.m. Monday, there will be a Veterans’ Day program at Harrison High School. All veterans and public are invited. There will be local speakers including Harrison High School Alumni veterans and special recognition will be given to a veteran during the ceremonies. Music will be provided by the Harrison High/Middle School Band, with refreshments provided to guest immediately following the event.
