According to a press release Monday from Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski, Sometime between 8 and 9 p.m. on January 10, a medium-build 5 foot 9 or 10 inch brown-haired suspect was filmed by security cameras breaking into a fenced in area outside the Tire Lube Express at Walmart. He reportedly hooked a chain to the back of his green and silver pickup and the other end to the locked gate and pulled the gate open. He allegedly stole approximately 180 used batteries from the storage area outside the facility. The batteries were valued at $1,600.

The Sheriff released the video from the scene and asked local media to publish a still-shot of the man and help with the search. The Sheriff said the 49-year-old Saginaw man was arrested late Tuesday afternoon. In his update Wednesday, Mioduszewski said, “the arrest was made possible by a couple of television viewers who recognized the subject while watching local newscasts.”

“It was determined that he had hauled 4,017 pounds of batteries away in his half-ton pickup,” the Sheriff added. He said the truck ran off the road into the ditch twice during his trip to a scrap yard in the Ashley-St. Charles area.

Mioduszewski said he was amazed the man, whose name has not yet been released, could steer the vehicle and that the truck’s suspension held up with the heavy load. All of the stolen batteries were recovered and are being returned to Walmart.

He is being held at the Isabella County Jail. An arraignment was scheduled for late Thursday.
