Walmart plans store for Clare

Clare City Manager Ken Hibl announced Tuesday that City staff has met with Walmart representatives about a proposed new store on Colonville Road.

Hibl said Tuesday, “We met with an engineer and architect today representing Walmart. They informally presented draft plans to us for preliminary review and comment regarding the planned construction of a new 158,000 square foot Walmart store on the commercially-zoned property along Colonville Road on the north side of the City (formerly the Bicknell property).” He added, “The preliminary plan also includes a separate gas/fuel station.”

Hibl said the representatives have planned a public open house in Clare outlining the project in late September or early October and will be presenting a site plan to the Clare Planning Commission in October.

He said, “They indicated they wish to commence construction in 2015 with a tentative store opening date of early 2016.”

Rumors of Walmart’s interest in locating a store on the north end of Clare several years ago met with stiff resistance from most of the business community in Clare. After hearing of the Walmart meeting with the City, Tom Koch, owner of Ideal Theatre and another business in Clare’s downtown, said in an email Wednesday, “Wow!  That was depressing.  What’s next, a nuclear waste dump or how about we begin to treat Ebola patients at the hospital?”

Hibl added that there was no additional information available yet on the project.

I’m thrilled about the Walmart saves most of us gas money instead of going to mt pleasant also provides more jobs, and we need them which is a good thing. Also the small town people need to realize it brings in more people for like hotels and other actives that goes around aka money. We all need money so I’m 100% for Walmart’s all the way…Besides smaller places are mostly all about hiring families and not fair to the rest of us on finding a job close to home but can’t afford the dang gas prices.

Why all the whining about Walmart coming to Claire? If anything it will draw more visitors to Claire and it,s downtown area. The choices now are very limited and w/ high prices. It is not fair to Claire residents to try and force them to shop the current businesses by denying others the freedom to operate in Clare. Clare is known as a friendly city. Please do not spoil that image with greed and arrogance. I am a Claire resident and veteran.

Wow! is right. We get encouraging news one week about Clare’s growth downtown and now this discouraging, depressing news. Lets do more to bring in tourist that the past article was about, this will help our merchants earn more and most of all hang onto their business and at the same time increase the city’s revenue. This big store will severely hurt hardwares, clothing, automotive, gas stations, paint suppliers, drug stores etc. In other words this will pretty much ruin our popular up north destination. I’ve been sick in my stomach since hearing about Walmart. The city leaders can not hold up to Walmart’s marketing professional. ROM. 8:28.

The city of Clare businesses and people held off Walmart years ago, we can do it again. I hope we will be advised of the hearings being held so the public can come in and let their opinions be heard. Bringing Walmart in will close down a lot of businesses in Clare and Farwell. We do not need big box stores in our small towns. Go away Walmart.

I think having a walmart in Clare or Harrison would be a great idea. Just think of all the new jobs that it would offer. Plus an inexpensive department store is really needed.I personally do not have the extra gas money to go to Houghton Lake or Mt. Pleasant just to pick up a couple of items for the kids especially.
