Wilson, Ledford vye to be sheriff

John Wilson is seeking re-election November 8th to his third term, for four more years as Clare County Sheriff. He is facing a challenge for the job from former Clare Undersheriff Barney Ledford.

Sheriff Wilson is a lifelong resident of Clare County. He lives in Harrison with two sons, Ross and Evan.
Ledford has been a resident of Clare County for 25 years. He and wife Suzanne have three children Jonathon, Michael and Emily.
John said his love of public service began in eighth grade when he joined the Explorer program. He graduated from the 44th Delta College Police Academy in 1989 and has been with the Sheriff’s Department for most of the years since. He has been a corrections officer, dispatcher, deputy and was elected as Sheriff in 2008.

He is a member of the Harrison Sportsman’s Club, Lion’s Club, Harrison Moose and the Masons.

Commander with the Warren Police Department and served as Clare County Undersheriff.

He has an Associate Degree from Macomb College and a BA from Wayne State University.
He is currently a criminal justice instructor and program coordinator at Mid Michigan Community College and Macomb College.
Ledford said his mission if elected is that “all Sheriff’s Department duties and responsibilities be conducted honestly with integrity and professionalism. There will be no double standard, cronyism or ‘good old boy’ environment.”

Ledford said he will work to “improve citizen trust and respect and insure a positive perception of the Office of Sheriff. This can only be accomplished through leadership that will not accept anything less than high standards, expectations and excellence for all Sheriff’s Department members.”
Wilson said he is proud of the progress the Sheriff’s Department has made. He listed increased professional standards, technology improvements and increased community communication under his leadership.

Wilson added that he is honored to be “your sheriff.” He said he wishes, “to continue serving you in the future providing the best services possible.” He emphasized that, “Leadership, honesty experience and values mean a secure future.”

Wilson concluded that he wishes to continue serving in the future. He said, “Leadership, honest, experience and values mean a secure future.”
