Building the Ann Arbor Railroad, probably about 1887. John White, civil engineer in charge of construction, is second from left. Mr. White came to Clare from Ireland in 1880, and it was here he met and married Emma Becker, aunt of Louis Becker of Clare. Besides helping build the Ann Arbor Railroad in his part of the state, John White later served as Clare County highway engineer and city engineer in Clare. He was the father of three children, two of whom were well known business men in Clare, Edward White of White’s Nursery and George White of White’s Jewelry Store.
