An early morning fire last Friday at 811 West Coleman Road in Gilmore Township destroyed an unattached garage as well as a boat, camper and car that were nearby, Surrey Fire Chief Dave Williams said.

The home, rented by Paul Weissend, caught on fire also but was quickly extinguished by firefighters. “It had minor damage,” Williams reported.

Williams said the home is owned by Rawson Farms.

Surrey Township firefighters were assisted at the scene by Clare Fire Department and Nottawa Sherman Fire Department, and by Michigan State Police Troopers and Mobile Medical Ambulance Service.

Williams said there were no injuries. He said they were on the scene for about two hours in the extreme cold, which was reported at between minus 16 to 20 below zero.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
