A Monday evening fire at Ruckle’s Pier in downtown Clare was quickly extinguished with damage limited to a range and some products at the restaurant, Clare Fire Chief Jim Chapman said.

Chapman said the fire was reported at 7:56 p.m. October 7th and that by the time the department arrived about five minutes later, they found “light” smoke coming from the front of the building.

The businesses employees, with the help of two restaurant patrons (Retired Fire Chief Bob Bonham and Retired Firefighter Bob Crawford) already had the blaze under control.

Chapman reported that the employees said they immediately discharged the “Range Hood Fire Suppression System and had used two fire extinguishers on the blaze.”

He added that when the Clare Fire Department arrived they used one of their dry chemical fire extinguishers to put out the small remaining fire behind the stove.

“There was no damage to the building,” Chapman said. “damage was confined to the range and smoke damage to some products.”

“The range may have to be replaced,” Chapman added. He said an estimate of the damages was not yet available.

He said, “Business owner Jason Ricketts, who expects to have the business open again very soon, is coordinating the cleanup with the Health Department and Central Restoration.”

In a Facebook post, Ricketts said, “The fire is over and the cleaning and getting set back up is happening. We are working with insurance, contractors and health inspectors to report open as soon as possible. The damage was very small but the cleanup will be huge.”

The CFD was assisted at the scene by Surrey Township Fire Department, the Clare Police Department, the Clare DPW, Mobile Medical Ambulance Service and DTE Energy.
