Clare Fire Department was called to the scene of a vehicle and Amish buggy accident on Stevenson Lake Road Sunday evening.

Clare Fire Chief Jim Chapman said the accident occurred around 9:12 p.m. near the intersection of Meridian Road when a vehicle driven by Brayene Benner, 22 of Big Rapids, hit a buggy and destroyed it.

“The family in the buggy was very fortunate,” Chapman said. “They sustained only minor injuries. The buggy had to be hauled away in four pieces. It was a pile of rubble.”

The buggy driver was Larry Bontrager who was traveling with his wife Elmira and their three-month-old son. Chapman said they were taken to MidMichigan Medical Center Clare by Mobile Medical Ambulance Service for treatment of their injuries. The horse pulling the buggy also had minor injuries.

He said Benner only sustained bumps and bruises in the crash.

The CFD, who was on the scene for about an hour, was assisted by the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department and Mobile Medical Ambulance Service.
