An Alternative View: A Sense of Deja Vu

January 13, 2020

The Rev. Bro. Robert Barker is a retired clergyperson with BSc and MDiv degrees.

In 2003 Bush 43 illegally invaded Iraq and overthrew Saddam Hussain based on lies about WMD and confirmed as lies by the U.N. and our own troops in Iraq. It cost the U.S. 4,424 American soldier’s lives and 31,952 wounded, as well a $1 trillion added to the national debt.  Iraqi civilian deaths to the present due to our war total 461,000 with as many injured.  Iraq was thrown into religious and political turmoil which continues to the present.  It also brought about ISIS, a major terrorist threat to the Middle East and the world.  Finally, as a result, Iraq became client state to Iran.

Multi millions of people in the United States and around the world protested the illegal and criminal U.S. invasion of Iraq.  I joined my voice with them by writing letters to the editor of this and other publications and participating in demonstrations held in Mt. Pleasant and mid-Michigan.

It took a decade since Bush 43’s aggressive invasion and war in Iraq for a majority of Americans to finally admit that this war was wrong being based on lies and misinformation fed to them by Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld.

Choosing the most extreme measure out of several offered Trump has now inflamed tensions in the mid-east and increased the chance of war with Iran by assassinating Iranian General Qasem Soleimani based on slim evidence that he was planning “imminent and sinister attacks” on American diplomats and military personnel. Both Bush 43 and Obama declined such an assassination because it could only worsen tensions and perhaps lead to widening war.

The Iraqi Prime Minister told his Parliament that when assassinated Soleimani was in Iraq as part of an Iraqi mediation effort between Saudi Arabia and Iran to defuse tensions which is good for the United States and the world.

Those of you who lived through and perhaps protested the 2003 Iraq war are likely having a sense of Déjà vu.   The same individuals who sold the Bush 43’s Iraqi invasion based on lies are trying to sell a war with Iran to the American public based on lies, misinformation, and propaganda.

VP Pence as a Republican Representative supported the 03 Iraq war. Now Pence has falsely stated, according to experts in a USA Today report, that Soleimani aided the 9/11 hijackers. War hawk Secretary of State Pompeo, like Colin Powel who mouthed the Bush lies for the 03 Iraq war that he has since regretted, is touting falsities to push for war with Iran.  Pompeo offers no evidence that Tehran was behind alleged attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.  Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) in 2003 supported Bush’s Iraq war.  He now cheer-leads for war with Iran.

Trump’s ignorance and arrogance has created an international crisis worsening the situation in the Middle East that threatens the security of the U.S. and the world.  As a candidate Trump pledged to end the endless wars yet now he foments another.  Massachusetts Representative Seth Moulton, a combat veteran who served in the Iraq war and member of the Armed Forces Committee, said “We have the most reckless Commander in Chief in American history.” I agree.

Consider this my opening salvo against Trump’s march to war against Iran.  Join me in protest.
