At their annual meeting before the regular April 14 meeting, the Grant Township Board adopted a budget totaling $615,134 in revenues and expenditures for the coming year.
The total is down significantly from the budgeted figure and down even more in the actual figures for 2014-15, which totaled $864,255.88.
As of March 31 the township’s total liability and equity is $1,012,491, Supervisor Dan Dysinger said. With expenditures anticipated at $615,357, that will leave approximately $397,357 as a fund balance at the end of 2015-16.

In an interview Wednesday, Dysinger said the only significant change in the General Fund Budget that is projected for the coming year is the amount earmarked for township roads. For 2014-15 the township spent $168,139.80 on road maintenance. The amount budgeted for the coming year is just $45,000.
That amount will include two applications of brine to gravel roads this summer and finishing the Cornwell Avenue gravel project between Washington Road and Clarabella Road (County Line), a project which began last year and is jointly funded with Sheridan Township.

Dysinger said, “On April 1st I attended the Clare County Road Commission meeting to make the CCRC aware that due to an uncooperative policy at the Road Commission, Grant Township will no longer fund repaving projects in the Township. The Township can use our money in the next few years to improve gravel roadways. Also, in the future, if [there are] guarantees from the CCRC on means or policy to protect our roadways from heavier traffic (heavy trucks), we could return to paving if funding is available.”
Also approved in the final budget for the coming year was cost of living increases for trustees, Supervisor, Supervisor Assistant, Treasurer, Clerk and Election fees and per diem for chairperson and inspector.

At the February meeting, the board approved four salary resolutions for the 2014-15 budget year with 1.5 percent salary increases for the Supervisor, Clerk, Treasurer and two Trustees.
The Supervisors salary will be $827.93 monthly with the addition of $250 for maintenance. The Clerk’s salary will be $1,359.88 monthly. The Treasurer’s monthly salary will be $961.05 plus an annual amount of $1.85 per property parcel on the summer tax collection, an amount that is reimbursed by the State. Each of the two trustees on the board will receive $126.67 monthly.

Also at the meeting board members were updated on the detours planned for Colonville Road (Eberhart Road north and south of Colonville) and the detour for heavy trucks and auto traffic to Grant road during the closing and repairs of the railroad crossing on West Fifth in Clare. That project is currently scheduled for July 1.
