Once again warmer temperatures approaching 40 degrees hit the area earlier this week with a second “January Thaw” that melted most of the snow in the area.

All area schools and most schools across northern Michigan were closed Monday and Tuesday due to rain which turned nearly all back roads to treacherous conditions due to ice.

Drivers slowed to a crawl on Dunlop Road on the southwest side of Clare. The road was nearly impassable because of the ice buildup.

The rain, sometimes heavy continued throughout the day filling ditches and rivers with nearly an inch of rain and melting snow water. By Tuesday morning most of the ground was once again bare, but the rain continued to fall and turned to a light snow, once again covering the ground and roads.

Sheriff John Wilson said they hadn’t had a significant increase in accident calls but drivers around the Clare area reported that the back roads were nearly impassable due to the ice buildup. Tuesday’s snowfall complicated driving even on the blacktop roads.
